Spanish farmers renew call for more GMOs

Spanish maize farmers have called for the approval of more genetically modified crops. It comes from those who plant GM maize in the country. Spain is the major producer of GM maize in Europe ( Agrow passim). The only available GMO for maize is Monsanto’s corn-borer resistant Bt MON810 line. The farmers call for more GM maize and other crops for their “colleagues who plant cotton and sugar beet to name just two examples” as they are “good value for money”. The farmers made the call through the pro-GMO lobby, Asociación PRObio. “Insect-resistant Bt cotton and herbicide-tolerant sugar beet are available in other countries and allow far greater yields with lower environmental impacts,” they say. “Some 60% of the world’s cotton is GMO, and the products carrying them are sold in the EU.”
