Redox granted patent for walnut extract nematicide
US plant nutrition company Redox Chemicals (Burley, Idaho) has been granted a patent (7,927,635) by the US Patent and Trademark Office for the use of the black walnut ( Juglans nigra) extract, juglone (5-hydroxy-naphthoquinone) as a nematicide. The ai is obtained by acid or ethanol extraction of nut shells, leaves, roots, bark, and wood. The patent notes that the enhanced efficacy of the claimed extract compared to juglone alone may be due to the presence of other compounds. Field trials of the product, which will be sold under the NatureCur brand name, showed that it effectively reduces nematode-induced damage in oranges and root forking in carrots.
