Indian endosulfan review to be expedited
The Indian government is to ask a committee reviewing the organochlorine insecticide/acaricide, endosulfan, to expedite its report. The move comes after a delegation of legislators from the southern Indian state of Kerala met the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, urging him to impose a national ban on the active ingredient. The delegation also urged the central government to support the listing of the ai on the Stockholm Convention of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). India’s opposition to the proposed POPs listing was criticised within the country ( Agrow No 603, p 20). Dr Singh expressed the view that a national ban would require national consensus backed by scientific study.
