Indian court invalidates state GM seed price fixing
The High Court of Indian state Gujarat has termed the Gujarat Cotton Seeds Act as invalid, being in conflict with central government legislation, reports Indian newspaper Business Line. The state fixed the price of genetically modified insect-resistant Bt cotton seeds in 2008 under the Act ( Agrow No 544, p 21). The National Seeds Association of India challenged the validity of the Act and the price fixing there last year. The seed industry has also moved the High Courts in two other states, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, which had also imposed price restrictions in 2008. The matter is pending in the courts, Business Line reports.
