Indian experts favour limited release of GM aubergines

Most members of an expert scientific committee set up by India’s Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) favour a limited release of genetically modified insect-resistant Bt brinjals (aubergines) under strict regulatory conditions, reports Indian newspaper Indian Express. In a meeting held late last month, members argued against the need for carrying out any further tests. There was agreement that the safety of the Bt gene had been established by the tests that had already been conducted and that more time must not be lost in further tests and field trials, the newspaper reports. Some of them were of the opinion that if additional tests did need to be conducted, they should be done in parallel with a limited release of the crop for cultivation.
