WHO grants interim OK for Bayer's LifeNet
Bayer CropScience has received a UN WHO interim recommendation for its new insecticidal mosquito net, LifeNet. Bayer incorporated the pyrethroid insecticide, deltamethrin, into polypropylene fibre for the manufacture of the nets ( Agrow No 581, p 2). The insecticide is gradually released, ensuring long-term protection, Bayer says. Deltamethrin is a WHO-recommended active ingredient for vector control. Head of Bayer’s non-crop Environmental Science business Dr Gunnar Riemann says the recommendation “makes it possible” to offer international malaria control programmes a new tool. “We are convinced that LifeNet will help public health authorities and aid organisations achieve sustained success in the battle against malaria,” he says. The “forthcoming launch” of LifeNet allows Bayer to offer a “complete portfolio” for integrated vector management.
