EFSA issues guidance for GM food/feed assessment
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued updated guidelines for the assessment of genetically modified food and feed. They reflect the latest scientific approaches for assessing allergenicity and selecting comparator plants against which the GM plant is compared. They also establish a new statistical methodology. The revised guidelines were due in April but there was prolonged debate over several issues, including how to handle stacked-trait lines ( Agrow No 613, p 8). The EFSA has acknowledged the “increasing complexity” of GM plants and points out that each section of the document addresses specifically the requirements for crops containing a combination of traits.
