MEPs seek to simplify crop area data needs

The European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee is seeking to reduce the administrative burden of a proposed EU system for compiling data on the areas of permanent crops, such as fruit and grapevines. The European Commission issued proposals last year on a new system that would start in 2012 ( Agrow No 593, p 9). Committee members voted in favour of amendments that would exclude holdings of less than 0.2 ha, rather than the Commission’s lower threshold of 0.1 ha. Other amendments would remove requirements to provide a breakdown of figures by fruit tree density and age, or by type of wine production. The amendments need the approval of the full Parliament.
