Belgian anti-GMO protest turns violent

Eighteen people have been injured in an attempt by activists to storm a field of genetically modified potatoes in Wetteren, Belgium, reports Dutch newswire Expatica.com. The injured included ten policemen and eight activists. Some 40 people were detained by the police. Scientists from the Belgian research institute, the VIB (Ghent), which planted the GM lines, tried to talk with the over 200 demonstrators who took part in the action, Expatica reports. Some of the plants were reportedly destroyed.
