China aims for cleaner pesticides
China aims to promote the development of “environmentallyfriendly” and “economical” new pesticide products in its latest five-year plan (2011-2015), reports the Chinese newspaper, the AgriGoods Herald. Guidelines for the development of the pesticide industry were outlined in the “Petroleum and chemical industry 12th five-year plan development guide”, compiled by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation and released last month. The guide suggests that “high-toxicity” pesticides should be gradually eliminated and that by 2015, “high-efficacy, safe, economic and environmentally friendly pesticide products” should account for over 50% of the country’s pesticide production. New policies governing the Chinese pesticide industry, released last year, stated that by 2015, the number of pesticide companies in China should have been reduced by 30% ( Agrow No 602, p 22).
