EU Ministers consider biocide changes
An aim for greater safety with less administrative burden lies behind EU Ministers’ calls for amendments to European Commission proposals to revise the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8). The Directive covers a wide range of products, including non-crop pesticides. The Ministers have drawn up a draft opinion ready for formal adoption at their first reading of the proposals, due before the summer break. The vote is expected to go smoothly as much of the compromise package was broadly agreed by Ministers last December ( Agrow No 607, p 11). They have outlined the reasoning behind their views on the planned revision, which has remained a contentious issue since 2009. The Commission has indicated that it can accept the Ministers’ position, they point out.
