EU starts pilot monitoring of bee mortality
The European Commission has initiated a pilot project for the surveillance of bee mortality and the possible reasons for its increase. The aim is to gather reliable data from EU member states. The project is part of the Commission’s programme to investigate and halt the decline in bee populations ( Agrow No 608, p 8). An earlier study by the European Food Safety Authority could not establish a direct causal link between increased bee mortality and pesticides or other substances, but concluded that surveillance systems in member states were weak.
