Paraguay agronomists back agchem sales rules

The Paraguayan association of agronomists, the AIAP, has hailed the government’s new rules on pesticide selling as a major advance. The Paraguayan plant health and seed quality service, the Senave, issued Resolution 292/11 in April, banning the sale of pesticides by non-agronomists or those without specialised knowledge of the chemicals ( Agrow No 615, p 24). The AIAP has complained that “many pesticide sellers in the Paraguayan countryside have also been those selling washing machines or refrigerators”. The association added that the policy followed claims from its agronomists that conflicts of interest had often arisen under the previous regime. The AIAP is expected to propose a working group with the Senave on several issues at its annual conference later this month.
