Rothamsted applies for GM wheat trials in UK
UK-based research centre Rothamsted Research (Harpenden, Hertfordshire) has applied to the UK Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) for permission to carry out trials on genetically modified insect-resistant wheat. The GM lines convey a “novel” resistance to aphids by utilising an aphid pheromone alarm system. If the approval is granted, Rothamsted intends to commence trials in March-April 2012 and repeat them in 2013. The plants would be sown on an area of 288 m 2.
