French court acquits GMO vandals on technicality

A French criminal court in Poitiers has acquitted the defendants accused of vandalising Monsanto’s field trials of genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize in 2008vandals. They include French MEP José Bové, reports French newswire AFP. The verdict was given because of a textual error. The defendants were being prosecuted for the destruction of a plot on which "cultivation of a commercial nature” was authorised, whereas the destruction was of a plot where crops were being cultivated for research, “which is legally different”. The court ruled that the text referred to by the prosecution did not match the alleged crime and that reclassification was not possible.
