Bolivia GM soybean adoption hits 92%

The take-up of genetically modified soybeans in Bolivia has reached 92%, according to the newswire SciDev. Monsanto’s glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready soybeans are the only GM crop to be approved in the country. The International Service for the Application of Agri-biotech Applications has estimated last year’s area for the GM crop at 85% of the national soybean acreage ( Agrow No 621, p 20). SciDev reports that some $80/ha has been saved through GM soybean adoption in the country. Bolivia has recently passed legislation to prohibit the use and import of GMOs ( Agrow No 619, p 17).
