Nigerian govt to support GM crop adoption

Nigerian authorities have promised that the adoption of biotechnology will alleviate the country’s scarcity of food, newswire AllAfrica reports. The Minister of Science and Technology, Ita Okon Bassey Ewa, told a public forum on the use of agricultural biotechnology in the country last month that the government believed that it would solve the problem of the country’s insufficient food supply. Nigeria’s Parliament passed biosafety legislation that would pave the way for the commercialisation of genetically modified crops earlier this year ( Agrow No 618, p 25).
