Australia OKs Bayer's GM hybrid canola
The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has concluded that the proposed commercialisation of Bayer CropScience’s genetically modified glufosinate- and glyphosate-tolerant hybrid canola poses negligible risks to people or the environment. The company is seeking approval for the InVigor x Roundup Ready canola for all commercial canola-growing areas ( Agrow No 612, p 25). The hybrid was produced by conventional breeding of the two GM lines, which were approved individually in 2003. However, InVigor canola has never been grown commercially in Australia. The OGTR’s risk assessment and management plan for the GM hybrid is open to public comment until October 18th.
