US regulators settle civil rights dispute

The US California EPA’s Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) has agreed to increase monitoring of the fumigant, methyl bromide, near certain schools. The deal between the DPR and the federal EPA is aimed at settling a complaint filed in 1999 under the Civil Rights Act. It alleged that the DPR’s annual renewal of the methyl bromide registration discriminated against Latino school children due to health impacts of the pesticide.
