EU does not plan to limit glyphosate use
The European Commission has no plans to place any restrictions on the use of the herbicide, glyphosate. The response came after a recent meeting of the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health Committee. The Committee and the Commission discussed a report from the organisation, Earth Open Source, published in June, which questioned the EU assessment of glyphosate. They also considered views on the report by Germany, which was rapporteur member state for the herbicide’s EU re-registration in 2001. “For the time being, it is not considered appropriate to take restrictive action as regards the current uses of glyphosate or glyphosate-containing products,” the Committee concluded. Nevertheless, given the broad issues included in the report, further discussions will be held, it added.
