EU to phase out asulam
An EU appeal committee has backed the European Commission’s proposal not to re-register the herbicide, asulam. The fate of the active ingredient was referred to the committee after the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health had twice failed to agree on whether or not to accept the Commission’s proposal ( Agrow No 621, p 11). Once the decision has been formally adopted by the Commission, EU member states will be instructed to withdraw approvals for asulam products by December 31st 2011. They will be able to grant grace periods for using existing stocks up to the end of 2012.
