EU presidency urges co-operation on GMOs

Poland has urged EU member states to co-operate in finding a compromise over proposals to allow national bans on the cultivation of EU-approved genetically modified crops. Poland currently holds the six-month rotating EU presidency and is seeking to overcome the stalemate arising from discussions during the last two presidencies. EU Ministers failed to complete their first reading of the proposals in June, due to ongoing concerns that national restrictions could flout free-trade obligations under the EU internal market and the WTO ( Agrow No 619, p 9).
