EFSA confirms safety of triple-stack GM maize
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has confirmed its positive safety assessment of Monsanto/Dow AgroSciences’ genetically modified stacked-trait MON89034x1507xNK603 maize. The Authority issued safety clearance for the line in 2010 for import, processing and use in food and feed ( Agrow No 601, p 9). However, the European Commission asked it for a further opinion covering all sub-combinations of the single traits. In assessments of previous applications, the EFSA has covered each individual trait, plus two of the three possible sub-combinations (1507xNK603 and MON89034xNK603). The Authority concludes that it is unlikely that any of the possible combinations will have an adverse effect on health or the environment. The insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant line combines Monsanto’s Genuity VT Double Pro (MON89034xNK603) with Dow’s Herculex I (1507). The EFSA’s opinion now goes forward for consideration by the Commission and EU member states.
