Australasia OKs MON87708 soybeans
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has recommended the approval of food derived from Monsanto’s genetically modified dicamba-tolerant MON87708 soybeans. The soybeans have been modified with a dicamba mono-oxygenase gene from the soil bacterium, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. MON87708 soybeans are intended for cultivation in major soybean-growing countries. Monsanto completed approval submissions in the US and Canada last year ( Agrow No 607, p 5). It has applied for approvals in the EU, Japan and South Korea. The company plans to combine dicamba tolerance with its glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans. The FSANZ decision is open to public comment until November 29th.
