German call for tough stance on illegal pesticides
The German crop protection association, the IVA, has called for strict prosecution for the offence of distribution of illegal pesticides. While welcoming a draft law on the subject, which could impose a penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment, the association says that the bill does not go far enough. It says that the “very high level of protection for consumers, users and the environment” in Germany should not be undermined by too lax rules for import violations. The association asks that frequent offenders lose all permits for parallel trade. "It is unacceptable that in such a sensitive consumer area as plant protection, unreliable market participants are treated with kid gloves," says IVA chief executive Volker Koch-Achelpöhler.
