EFSA weighs MON88017 maize cultivation

Cultivation of Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant YieldGard VT RW (MON88017) maize will require specific measures to be imposed to limit the development of insect resistance and manage the use of the herbicide, glyphosate, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). While the maize itself is unlikely to adversely affect the environment, its cultivation management could result in environmental harm unless appropriate measures are taken, the EFSA concludes in its evaluation of Monsanto’s application for EU cultivation approval.
