US EPA mulls streptomycin exemption
The US EPA is considering an application from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) for an emergency exemption to allow the use of the bactericide, streptomycin sulfate, to control citrus canker ( Xanthomonas axonopodis pv citri) on grapefruits. The FDACS claims that the disease has become a serious threat to the grapefruit industry. Alternative control methods cause phytotoxic effects at high temperatures, it adds. The FDACS proposes that applications be made on up to 54,000 acres (22,000 ha) between June and September next year.
