Spain grants emergency use to 1,3-D

The Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Agriculture, the MARM, has granted exceptional use authorisation for the fumigant, 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D). The approval is for use as a soil disinfectant on grapevines, horticulture plants and cut flowers, and runs until February 28th 2012. The co-operative, COAG Almeria, requested approval. The Ministry has granted similar approvals for 1,3-D since the EU removed the fumigant from its list of approved active ingredients in March 2009. However, it allows member states to grant emergency use for up to 120 days. The EU confirmed its decision not to re-register 1,3-D earlier this year after some states advocated its use as a replacement for the fumigant, methyl bromide.
