Spain grants Zayintec natural insecticide OK

Spanish plant genetics company Zayin Technology (Zayintec - Almería) has been granted registration of a chemical compound, alpha-zingiberene. The insecticidal or repellent compound is for the control of tomato leaf miners ( Tuta absoluta), and is a naturally occurring agent, particularly in ginger and turmeric essential oils, the company says. It can be applied in its pure form or its natural form, being in “adequate concentrations in essential oils”, Zayintec notes. The product can be used against miners and other tomato pests. Losses to leaf miners have been reportedly severe across much of the Mediterranean region’s tomato growers including Spain over the past few years ( Agrow No 589, p 25).
