Pioneer to test GM canola in Australia
DuPont seed subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International has applied to the Australian Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) to field test genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant canola. The canola expresses the gat4621 gene from Bacillus licheniformis. Pioneer plans to test the crop in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia between May 2012 and February 2016. Testing would take place at up to eight sites in the first year and 20 sites in subsequent years on a maximum of 4 ha per site for the first two years and 10 ha per site in the last two years. The OGTR expects to issue a risk assessment and risk management plan in February 2012.
