US OKs Monsanto's second RIB maize

Monsanto has received US EPA approval for its refuge-in-a-bag (RIB) genetically modified insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant Genuity VT Double Pro (MON89034xNK603) maize. It will be sold as Genuity VT Double Pro RIB Complete for the 2012 season. Each bag comprises 95% Genuity VT Double Pro, which produces the Bt Cry2Ab2 and Cry1A.105 toxins, and 5% non- Bt maize as an anti-resistance refuge for lepidopteran pests. “In 2012, this product will be offered by Monsanto brands and licensees across the corn-growing area,” says Monsanto executive vice-president and chief commercial officer Brett Begemann. Commercialisation of the product is pending individual state authorisations and notifications. An RIB version of Monsanto/Dow AgroSciences´ SmartStax maize received US approval earlier this year ( Agrow No 614, p 23).
