Rhodia/Endura deal for PBO
French specialty chemical company Rhodia Aroma Performance (Lyon) and Italian agrochemical company Endura Fine Chemicals (Bologna) have entered into a raw material supply agreement for the insecticide synergist, piperonyl butoxide (PBO). Rhodia will supply Endura with catechol, which provides the only “completely synthetic route” for the PBO production. PBO is traditionally produced through a sassafras oil-based route, the companies say. “Thanks to this alliance between Rhodia and Endura, this synthetic PBO is by far the most sustainable insecticide synergist available on the market and opens new opportunities in the agrochemical sector,” says Endura managing director Cosimo Franco. Endura entered into a technology commercialisation deal involving PBO with UK-based research centre Rothamsted Research and the Australian New South Wales Department of Primary Industries in 2009 ( Agrow No 570, p 3).
