Peru seeks to reclaim land for organics
The Peruvian government has launched a programme to turn thousands of hectares in the Andean mountain region into agricultural land. The Ministry of Agriculture’s rural development programme body, the Agrorural, is looking to claim an extra 300,000 ha of land over the next five years. The goal, if met, would result in more than doubling the region’s agricultural land. The first stage includes the recovery of 150 ha, previously farmed over 1,000 years ago. The intention is for all of the land to be for the use of organic crop farmers. New technology allowing for “environmentally friendly” increased crop production is to be promoted, the Ministry says. The project includes $100 million of investment.
