Zimbabwe to join biotechnology centre

The Zimbabwe Parliament has ratified a motion to make the country a member of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, government newspaper The Herald reports. Science and Technology Minister Heneri Dzinotyiwei says membership would grant Zimbabwe access to advanced research facilities at no cost. The Minister says that adopting genetically modified crops would allow a revival of the agricultural sector and make land reforms successful. However, he notes that GM crops only account for 1% of the technology, adding that “from a scientific point of view there was nothing wrong with GMOs.”
