Australian diuron suspension implemented
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has suspended product registrations for the herbicide, diuron, until March 31st 2012 to protect aquatic ecosystems. The suspension took effect on November 28th. It prohibited non-agricultural use from that date and bans application to bananas, coffee, papayas, pineapples, sugar cane and tea from December 5th. It affects about two-thirds of the 101 registered diuron products. The APVMA has issued new use instructions to minimise run-off. Annual use on all crops must not exceed 1.8 kg ai/ha. The Authority indicated in October that it planned to suspend diuron registrations while finalising its review ( Agrow No 626, p 22).
