US agchem expenditure up 1% in 2011
Total US farm expenditure on pesticides is expected to have risen by around $100 million, or 1%, this year, according to the USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS). The increase is attributed to a 1% rise in prices and a slight increase in planted crop areas. Overall crop input costs are set to have risen by 14.7%, largely due to a 28% rise in fertiliser costs. The increased cost of seed purchases is put at $1,100 million, or 6.7%, mainly due to a 6.5% rise in prices.
