Australia approves Bayer's GM hybrid canola
The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has approved the commercial planting of Bayer CropScience’s genetically modified glufosinate- and glyphosate-tolerant hybrid canola. The OGTR concluded in August that the InVigor x Roundup Ready canola posed negligible risks to people or the environment ( Agrow No 623, p 18). The hybrid was produced by conventional breeding of two GM lines, which were approved individually in 2003. However, InVigor canola has never been grown commercially in Australia. After lengthy moratoriums on GM canola cultivation in many Australian states, the only bans remaining in place are in South Australia and Tasmania.
