EU steps closer to deal on biocide rules
Representatives of EU member states and the European Parliament have reached a provisional agreement on the proposed revision of biocide regulations. While no details are available on the actual text of the compromise proposal, the parties say that it paves the way towards adoption of the new regulation next year. It would replace the EU biocidal products Directive (98/8), which covers non-crop pesticides and a wide range of preservatives and disinfectants. The diversity of products involved has been one reason for the prolonged debate and disagreement over the proposed changes, which were first issued by the European Commission in 2009.
