EU reaches deal on unified patent
An agreement on proposals to set up EU-wide patents has been reached between negotiators representing EU member states and the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee. The deal, which needs to be ratified by EU Ministers and the Parliament, is a step towards the European Commission’s aim to get a final agreement on the patent package before the end of the year ( Agrow No 620, p 8). The new system may cut current costs, which involve gaining national patents in different member states, by up to 80%. However, it has been held up by years of disagreements over how it would work.
