EFSA fees proposal expected next year
The European Commission expects to adopt a proposal on a new fee system for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in the third quarter of 2012. The provisional date is included in a 2012 “roadmap” of Commission impact assessments. It started work last year on an impact assessment on whether to allow the EFSA to charge fees for its work on processing approval applications, including those for pesticides and genetically modified crops ( Agrow No 602, p 13). The Authority is currently funded from the EU budget. The Commission is considering several options for a graduated fee scale, depending on the application type. Some EU member states have expressed support in view of the EFSA’s increasing workload, while others have stressed that the fees must not put smaller companies at a disadvantage ( Agrow No 606, p 12).
