Irregular agchem residues in quarter of Brazilian foods

The Brazilian national health surveillance agency, the Anvisa, has found that more than one in four samples of food contains either residues of unapproved pesticides for use on that crop or residues above permitted limits. The pesticide residue analysis in foods programme, the Para, analysed almost 2,500 samples of 18 fruit and vegetables taken in 2010. It found that 27.9% produced irregular or “unsatisfactory” results, and that the main foodstuffs containing either residues of pesticides not registered for use on that crop or above maximum residue limits (MRLs) were peppers at 91.8% of samples, strawberries at 63.4%, cucumbers (57.4%), and lettuces (54.2%).
