EU Ministers fail to decide on GM crop approvals
The European Commission is now free to go ahead with its proposed approvals for four genetically modified crops after EU Agriculture Ministers were unable to reach a majority decision in December. The approvals would be for food and feed use of: Syngenta’s three insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant maize lines, Agrisure GT/RW (MIR604xGA21), Agrisure CB/LL/RW (Bt11xMIR604) and Agrisure 3000 GT (Bt11xMIR604XGA21); and Dow AgroSciences’ insect-resistant cotton line, WideStrike (DAS24236xDAS21023). The four lines had been referred to Ministers after the EU regulatory committee had also failed to reach a qualified majority for or against the proposals ( Agrow No 627, p 12). This is likely to be the last set of approval decisions to be referred to Ministers. The system has been replaced by an appeal committee (see this issue).
