Two GM soybean decisions go to EU appeal committee

Decisions on EU approval of two more genetically modified crop lines will be referred to an appeal committee after EU member states once again failed to reach a qualified majority opinion. The European Commission has proposed approval for import and use in feed and food for two soybean lines: Monsanto’s insect-resistant MON87701; and DuPont seed subsidiary Pioneer Hi-Bred International’s dual herbicide-tolerant 356043 (Optimum GAT). The two lines gained safety clearance earlier this year from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA – Agrow No 621, p 11). The EFSA had addressed the questions raised by member states before delivering its opinion, the Commission points out. The latest referrals follow two other GM soybean lines in November ( Agrow No 629, p 8).
