EU presses ahead with four GM crop approvals
The European Commission has gone ahead with its proposed approvals of four genetically modified crops after EU Agriculture Ministers were unable to reach a majority decision in December. The approvals are for food and feed use of: Syngenta’s three insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant maize lines, Agrisure GT/RW (MIR604xGA21), Agrisure CB/LL/RW (Bt11xMIR604) and Agrisure 3000 GT (Bt11xMIR604XGA21); and Dow AgroSciences’ insect-resistant cotton line, WideStrike (DAS24236xDAS21023). The four lines had been referred to Ministers after the EU regulatory committee had also failed to reach a qualified majority for or against the proposals ( Agrow No 627, p 12). This is likely to be the last set of approval decisions to be referred to Ministers. The system has now been replaced by an appeal committee (see this issue).
