EU confirms limited re-registration for bitertanol
The EU re-registration of the fungicide, bitertanol, has been formally issued by the European Commission. The active ingredient is permitted only for use as a seed treatment and the approval, which commenced on January 1st 2012, will expire on June 30th 2015, rather than the standard ten years. Concerns had been raised regarding the hazard profile, due to the proposed classification of bitertanol as “reproductive toxicant category 1B”, and this will need to be reassessed, the Commission notes. The approval period is considered to be the shortest possible to allow the applicant to submit an application for renewal under the new EU agrochemical registration Regulation (1107/2009), which introduces requirements to assess hazardous properties.
