USDA seeks comments on MON87769 soybeans
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is inviting public comments on a request for non-regulated status by Monsanto for its altered content genetically modified MON87769 soybeans. They have been modified to produce oil that contains 20-30% omega-3 stearidonic acid (SDA). The soybeans express two transgenes, a delta-6 desaturase from Primula juiliae, and a delta-15 desaturase from Neurospora crassa. MON87769 received positive safety assessments from Food Standards Australia New Zealand in 2011 ( Agrow No 614, p 25). Monsanto plans to grow the new soybeans on limited acreage under an identity preservation system. The product will be marketed under the Soymega brand name. APHIS' risk assessment indicates that MON 87769 is unlikely to pose a plant pest risk. The public comment period will close on February 27th.
