France reaffirms opposition to GM maize cultivation
The French government has reaffirmed its opposition to the cultivation of Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize. The Ministers of Agriculture and of Ecology have stated that the line will be banned in the country this year. The Ministers made the assertion after meeting representatives from farmers' and beekeepers’ associations. In November, the French council of state, the Conseil d’État, cancelled the order of the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries prohibiting cultivation of the GM line ( Agrow No 630, p 11). France banned cultivation in February 2008 ( Agrow No 535, p 11).
