EU issues data rules for permanent crop areas
Rules governing a new EU system for compiling data on the area under permanent crops have been issued by the European Commission. The aim is to provide more timely and consistent information on crops such as fruit and grapevines. The final legislation incorporates some amendments by the European Parliament to reduce the administrative burden ( Agrow No 617, p 8). EU member states with a minimum planted area of 1,000 ha of individual crops will produce area data every five years, starting this year. The exception is for vines for purposes other than table grapes, where member states having a minimum area of 500 ha will start producing data in 2015.
