EU acetochlor phase-out to have limited impact on China
The EU's recent decision to phase out the herbicide, acetochlor, will have little impact on Chinese manufacturers of the active ingredient, reports the Chinese newspaper, the Southern Rural News. China has a total production capacity of 100,000 tonnes of the herbicide, and over 50% of its total output is exported. The main export destinations are Australia and South America, with exports to the EU accounting for only a “very small” part of the total. EU member states will have to withdraw approvals of the ai by June 23rd 2012, after an appeal committee backed the European Commission's phase-out proposal ( Agrow No 631, p 7).
