Soy rust spreading fast in Brazil

The spread of Asian soybean rust ( Phakopsora pachyrhizi) in the key Brazilian state of Mato Grosso has been relentless since its incidence was detected earlier this month, the state’s maize and soybean farmers’ association, the Aprosoja, says. There had been 34 cases by the middle of the month, after there having been none by the start and the rate is increasing. The association has raised an alert highlighting the increasing frequency of recent detections. Mato Grosso had accounted for over half (56%) of national cases by the time of reporting, newspaper Diario de Cuiaba notes. There were 50 incidences of rust reported in the state last year, and some 600 the previous year ( Agrow No 631, p 12).
